Drying Paint

Problem...

How can I dry acrylic paint quickly

and totally Hands "FREE" ?

While painting my wood carvings I have been frustrated because I don’t have a third arm to hold the hair dryer.
A lot of time was being wasted between washes...so here is a solution I came up with that worked well for me!

A large piece of bamboo split lengthwise,

then cut to fit your dryer and cemented together.

I had a 2" diameter piece of bamboo layin’ around, but I am sure a piece of PVC drain pipe with a notch cut in it would work just as well. Use your imagination here!

  1. Cut a piece of split bamboo to fit the top of your hair dryer.
  2. Use use a smaller piece as a foot (see photo)
  3. The top of the foot piece must be carved to hold the top piece. Adjust the angle to suit your needs.
  4. I used a 6 minute drying epoxy to hold them together.
  5. To level it, I used a belt sander. This creates a stable platform to hold the dryer.
  6. To hold the hair dryer down to the bamboo a steel clamp will work, but one or two big rubber bands will also do nicely, and are easy to replace.

The dryer is stable now…..but you still have to turn it off and on.

Hey! How about adding a foot control ?

Just about every wood carver I know owns a Foredom grinder.
If you unplug it from the foot control, you can simply plug in the dryer, and Ta-Da ... instant "Foot Control"!

Foredom also sells the foot control separately for about $29 or
you could go to a local sewing machine store and ask for a used "Carbon Pile" foot/knee control.
They all have a box of them layin’ around for parts and you could probably get one for around $10, or so.

As shown in the photo, I can now dry between coats with a minimum of effort and
vary the intensity of the heat with the foot control……while never putting down a brush.
